Aggie loved her life, but her friends
and family agreed she had a higher purpose, why else would they have
handed her over to the Dhemon of the Sector Guard?
Excerpt: With the autopilot locked on at the flick of a finger, Haaro stood and walked past her to the common area. Maintaining eye contact, he peeled the cloak off his shoulders and carefully folded it over one arm. Stretching his neck with his horns flashing in the dim light of the cabin, he extended his wings. Wings they certainly were. A beautiful burgundy and black opened and flexed in the small space. "Wow. Pretty. And they really fold that tightly around you?" She approached him and then stopped as the heater beeped. She retrieved the hot ration packs and poured the tea. A pressed button had a table extend and she gestured for him to take a seat. "Doesn't it get tiring, wrapping them around you like that all the time?" "I have to say, I thought you would be more surprised. I am a genetic throwback to the days when the warrior class of Dhemons had wings." He blew on the pack and she kept an eye on the readouts as she leaned on the food prep counter. "I have seen my own skin turn black and hard in space until they could reel me in. Nothing physical scares me." His at-rest wingspan covered about twelve feet. "Those wings are more for gliding than they are for flying, aren't they?" "Yes. They were traditionally used for low altitude drops. It was a battle tactic." He smiled at her insight. "The gene was expunged, mostly. Occasionally, it crops up. You really know your biogenetics for someone raised low tech." "Well, Cor did give me access to all of the databases and I was a ravenous learner. Plus, with my body sprouting alien limbs, it was a good idea to get familiar with the different configurations so that I wouldn't freak out when it happened." She glanced at him. "My winged form is feathered and not nearly as wide. More muscular though, I think." "Show me." He crossed his arms and sat back. "Doesn't one of us have to be at the con?" "No. Not as long as all signs are good. The alarms will warn us if we get close to anything." He smiled encouragingly. "Go ahead." She smiled and had a silly thought. "I haven't done this since I was old enough to know better." "Done what?" "Played I'll-show-you-mine-if-you-show-me-yours." Agreha took a deep breath and a final look at the control panel. It was clear and she had some time. She stretched and pulled the form of wings out of her mind and through her ribcage. The wings burst into life suddenly--white feathers glowing in the light of the shuttle. It was painful, but worth it for the look in Haaro's eyes.
